Hey everybody, I just wanted to let you guys know I'm not dead or anything. I've been offline for about 4-5 days now. It's just the Holiday season, so everyone in my family is going out, visiting people, and getting ready for Christmas; which means I don't have a lot of free time to be on the PC playing on OpenRPG and such. Hopefully I should have some free time to hop online soon. Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm alive, and will resume running games soonish. :D
Tis a shame that Scott has still not shown up…
The thing is that I would like to give HoA a try.
But it is hard to translate my character's style without Tome of Battle… and only Ashiel can approve requests here - at least to my knowledge.
Ohh well gotta wait more… maybe he will answer my PM… this year.
First of all, there are many ways to show your character's flavor through RP and class abilities (as there are a lot out there). You don't HAVE to be a warblade to LOOK and ACT like a warblade.
Second, why not play something new? :D
I don't know what your past experiences have been, but in my opinion, it's CRAZY fun to play a huge variety of stuff.
First of all, there are many ways to show your character's flavor through RP and class abilities (as there are a lot out there).
Yeah indeed there are.
However …ya' see - Tome of Battle is a win-win splatbook for me because it is both flavorful and simply good for melee folk as it gives them more options than just… errr 5ft then full attack… (ok I am exaggerating but you should know to what I am referring). Just take a look at the flavor descriptions in maneuvers and other sections of the book + the martial adepts are competent yet not overpowering (so its easy to DM for them as one does not have to adjust encounters… and that would be a case for more caster or non-tob melee/ranged heavy parties).
Mechanically my character would rely on single, precise yet potent strikes, counters (I have yet to find a non-tob class which can replicate this quintessential part of all IRL fencing schools … and yes I have practiced some of them) … stances (advanced footwork), superior focus (duel of wills and stuff) etc mainly from the Diamond Mind discipline which meshes so well with psionics (yeah I would take a psionic race… and yes I am well aware of that the concentration skill does not exist anymore in PF… this is why I have send that PM… so that this issue would be resolved in one way or another) - yes Void would rely almost solely on the technique… not sheer brute force.
Flavor-wise he would be a fantasy equivalent to Johannes Liechtenauer (the guy was like an European Musashi Miyamoto) and his long-term plan would include uniting the 9 disciplines into his own unique style (Liechtenauer did something similar) which would be represented in game terms by taking levels in the Master of Nine PRC - and yes, by entering this class I am actually nerfing myself mechanically as the prereqs are just horrendous.
Void would end up being more powerful as…well… lvl 20 Warblade.
Second, why not play something new? :D
Full casters/Manifesters ? - played clerics and druids to death + I like chars with some martial prowess. So no Wizard, Sorc and friends. I could play a psion I guess (its available in one HoA document from what I've seen)
Skill monkeys ? Scoundrelish chars ? - sorry not my thing… never played one (ok with the exception of that one-shot Factotum char). I just find them … hmm… no fun for some reason I cannot translate into words.
Non-Tob Martial classes ? - kinda too simple concept-wise (with the exception of Psychic Warrior or Ardent… but that's my primary char on BM)… + I do not feel like being totally outclassed after few levels by tier 2 and above guys… it just ruins the fun for me (this is why I am also reluctant to play tier 1 guys… not hyperoptimized…just a regular wizard or something else that does not gimp himself by nuking stuff).
So where should I aim ?
Somewhere in-between -> tier 3.
And it so happens that it would be my first pure Martial Adept (Gato is more of a Bard so he does not count).
That leaves me with Bard (I am already playing one on BM - that's my secondary char), Warblade, Swordsage, Crusader, Factotum, Beguiler, Binder and few other classes (I am not sure how this particular tier changed in pf though… anyway most of these classes are not available in this system).
